This is one of those ailments that many, including us, did not know about. It is not a life threatening problem, but can most certainly cause a lot of pain and discomfort. Burning tongue or burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is also known as:
-Glossodynia
-Glossopyrosis
-Oral Galvanism
-Stomatodynia
-Stomatopyrosis
The pain can be acute and even last for several days, mostly occuring in middle aged people. The most common symptoms are dry mouth, sore mouth, constant thirst, a burning sensation in the mouth or around the mouth, loss of taste, numbness on or around the tip of the tongue, and even a metallic taste in the mouth.
The main cause of BMS is a yeast infection in the mouth, but it can also be caused by a hormonal imbalance during menopause, acid reflux, medications, bad oral hygiene, nerve damage, irritating dentures, a vitamin B12 deficiency, and some endocrine disorders.
Below are some home remedies we have found very popular in relieving pain or even eliminating BMS. The patient should try to find the root of the issue so BMS does not return.
Sugar Free Gum or Ice
Chewing sugar free gum or sucking on a piece of ice will help temporarily relieve the pain caused by BMS.
Brushing with Baking Soda
Brushing with baking soda will help relieve any pain and help cleanse the teeth without any chemicals or irritating ingredients.
Vitamin B and Iron Rich Foods
Consuming more Vitamin B and iron rich foods could even eliminate BMS or greatly reduce the symptoms.
Triphala
Make a decoction prepared from Ayurvedic herbs (also known as Triphela), this will help cool the tongue and can also relieve any inflammation.
Hydration
Patients suffering from BMS should remain hydrated at all times to ensure well being and also for more practical purposes (a dry tongue burns more than a wet tongue!).
*The consumption of tobacco can greatly increase the symptoms and pain caused by BMS and can even cause it.
